Course Enrollment Dashboard

Bucknell is unique compared to most liberal arts institutions because we have three colleges/schools: Arts and Sciences (A&S), Management and Engineering. We can use data visualization techniques, such as the dashboards below, to determine how much cross-pollination there is between the three colleges, based on the course enrollment flow. For example, the tool we created allows us to determine A&S student enrollment in courses taught by Engineering faculty or engineering students taking Management courses, etc. In addition, the dashboard provides three different options for viewing the data (the tabs on the top of the dashboard) – flow graph, word cloud […]

The Value of Liberal Arts Education: Career Paths Dashboard

In the past couple of years, our team has been exploring approaches to display flows from one group to another. We researched many options, but decided that Sankey diagrams may be the best approach for what our goals were. They were visually appealing, easy to use and provided concise information using complex data. Below we demonstrate how we used Sankey diagrams to display flows. For an interactive version of the Career Paths dashboard, please click here. The first example traces the relationship between academic areas in Arts & Sciences and careers for graduated alumni.  The width of the lines shows proportionally to […]

Who Participated in Residential Colleges?

The Residential Colleges (RC) are tied to a first-semester class, so freshmen get to live and learn with students who share their interests. The RC participation rate of freshmen hovered from 38% to 36% from 2013 to 2015. Residential college participants are more likely to be members of underrepresented groups, such as international students, students of color, and first-generation students. Compared to non-participants, residential college 2015 participants scored higher averages on ACT, SAT total, SAT verbal, and SAT math. Graduation & Retention Rates

Retention rate is the percentage of a school’s first-time, first-year undergraduate students who continue at that school the next year. For example, a student who studies full-time in the fall semester and keeps on studying in the program in the next fall semester is counted in this rate. Graduation rate is the percentage of a school’s first-time, first-year undergraduate students who complete their program within 6 years. Bucknell is among the schools that retain and graduate the highest proportion of students. DataBytes is presented by the Office of Institutional Research & Planning

NSSE 2014 Survey Finding 2 – Student Time Usage

The 2014 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) asked that how many hours first-year (N=458)  and senior students (N=469) spend in a typical 7-day week doing different activities. An image above (move your mouse over the image and click to enlarge it) shows that both of them spend their most time in preparing for class, including studying, reading, writing, doing homework or lab work, analyzing data, rehearsing and other academic activities. First-year students and senior students spend similar time in preparing for class, relaxing, and socializing. Senior students spend more time than first-year students in working on campus for pay,  […]

Liberal Education Develops Skills Employers Want

Consistent with findings from 5 earlier surveys commissioned by AAC&U, the latest Hart Research shows that employers overwhelmingly endorse broad learning and cross-cutting skills as the best preparation for long-term career success. Individual faculty members certainly play key roles in providing or facilitating student learning. Note: The employer data are taken from Falling Short? College Learning and Career Success, a 2015 report on findings from a survey of employers and a survey of college students conducted for AAC&U by Hart Research Associates. One of the goals of the survey is to understand which learning outcomes employers believe are most important […]
